Yes! Track Notes

Old Dan Tucker was inspired by Pete Seeger's recording. I changed some lyrics to make it more kid friendly. Amy's fiddle, Matt's drumming, and Sean's mandolin are just fantastic on this track. Springsteen did a great version of this song too.

I Like Trucks was written for my nephew Chezky who loves trucks. I wish I could have gotten Johnny Cash to sing it with me. Len adds some awesome electric guitar.

Bold Beaver starts with a Neil Young style acoustic guitar riff and builds from there. It sounds like Stevie Wonder's clavinet in the middle of the song too. There was a real bold beaver that we saw in Maine.

Allis Chalmers is about a big old tractor we had when I lived on a farm as a teenager. The groove is a spinoff of the Kentucky Headhunters.

Sleep in a Tent was inspired by the O Brother Where Art Thou? Soundtrack and a little bit of Neil Young. We love camping too! Moosehead Lake in Maine is depicted in the gatefold of Yes!

I saw Springsteen sing Seven Night To Rock at Fenway Park and I fell in love with it. This version is a remix from Don't Forget the Donut with only the rewritten vocals and Alizon Lissance's awesome acoustic piano.

Rock Island Line was taught to me by my friend and fellow musician John Wiesner who used to play in the Music Fun Band. We snuck in a little guitar quote from the Beatle's Get Back.

Flying In An Airplane is in some ways my favorite track on the album about a real puddle jumper flight we took to Culebra in Puerto Rico. There's a little Doobie Brothers Black Water style guitar in there. Kids love to pretend to be airplanes and "fly" during this song at our shows.

Underneath It is Me is also known as I'm Gonna Put A Costume On. It was written by my friend Lucy Sollogub. We tried to do it in the style of Peter Paul and Mary who I adore. Hannah Lizotte is a fine up and coming singer who is only fourteen years old.

Yes O Yes is a participation folk song done here in celebration of Led Zeppelin's Bron-Y-Aur Stomp and Keith Richards infamous 5-string guitar tuning. I learned it from a wonderful music teacher Catherine Work.

Penguins Attention was taught to me by Betsy Zahniser. I am so glad we actually recorded this version at one of our shows because we were really having fun. We'll put the studio version up on the website soon.

I Wanna Be Green was written after I took a course in environmental science. I had the ¾ and 4/4 section worked out when Jordan suggested doing a 5/4 intro, but when we played it we actually added an extra beat every fourth measure. It ended up sounding a little like Jethro Tull and Yes which was awesome. Preschoolers are great at identifying the different time signatures.

My Name is Joe was taught to me by Lucy. I've tried to make this super-participation song visual for the album.

I Had a Rooster I also learned from one of Pete Seeger's albums. Young kids love this song. We introduce a new instrument with each verse. I always think about the animals and the farm I lived on in Titusville, Pennsylvania when I sing it.

Dogs In Outer Space was on my first album, but this version by the rock band X-Dreams, of which I was a member, was recorded in 1983 on a four-track cassette Portastudio. This tape recently resurfaced in an old box of tapes I was storing. Dogs was the first original song I ever actually played for children. Richard Cromonic wrote in a review in Sweet Potato, “You gotta love it!” referring to Dogs. The demo we submitted to him he declared “the gem of the month.”
